Pre-sedation drugs are administered to the patient providing a warm and euphoric sensation as they fall asleep. Once the patient is sleeping soundly, another drug (usually a strong barbiturate anesthetic) is given at a lethal dose to stop the heart. This is the most common method of euthanasia.
